Glossary

  • CARE Principles – The ‘CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance’ (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics) were developed by the RDA Indigenous Data Sovereignty Interest Group.
  • Crossref is a DOI registration agency. Although a DOI can be assigned to any type of resource, Crossref is primarily used to identify scientific articles.
  • DataCite is a DOI registration agency. Although a DOI can be assigned to any type of resource, DataCite is primarily used to identify datasets, text and physical samples.
  • Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) a persistent identifier for things like papers, projects, output management plans, physical samples, datasets and software (+ many more). DOIs are minted by two primary organizations— DataCite and Crossref. Crossref is primarily used for journal publications. DataCite started primarily to support DOIs for datasets, but has expanded to support DOIs for all types of resources.
  • FAIR – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. These come from the 2016, the ‘FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship’ were published in Scientific Data. These are high-level principles that do not prescribe implementation. Details can be found on each principle here.
  • Global Research Infrastructure is is knowledge infrastructure define as the “robust networks of people, artifacts, and institutions that generate, share, and maintain specific knowledge about human and natural worlds” (Edwards, 2010). This infrastructure includes researchers, administrators, technologists, publishers, funders and others essential to the scientific enterprise.
  • Local Context is a nonprofit and a global initiative that supports Indigenous communities with tools that can reassert cultural authority in heritage collections and data.
  • Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCIDs) are identifiers for researchers to connect to their research. Traditionally, we have thought of only connecting researchers to their published outputs like journal articles, but we are moving upstream to use ORCIDs to connect researchers to their proposals, output management plans, samples and projects.
  • Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) are long-lasting references to a digital resources.
  • PIDGraph is the visualization of the connected identifiers using  graph modelling and distributed network analysis techniques
  • Research Organization Registry (RORs) are used to disambiguate organizations. For instance, NSF could be the National Science Foundation, the National Sleep Foundation or the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka. When RORs are used with the acronym or name, we know which organization should get credit.
  • Research Output (or Data) Management Plan is a document that describes how your research outputs will be generated, stored, used and shared within your project.
